Strines (Dovecotes) Work Party / Netting 03/05/13

Apologies for the short notice but water levels and equipment requirements are now available to net the front pond at Strines (Dovecotes).

On Friday (03/05/13) @ 18:00 we will be attempting to net the pond and have a general clear up around the water edges while the levels are down.

Those that can attend should bring waders/wellies and gloves. Fork, spades etc may be useful.

For those who cannot make it and those that are interested, we will update our endeavours on the blog.

Junior Match Fishing Report. Border Fisheries

Sunday saw seven of the DNMAC juniors competing in an individual completion, at Crewe’s Border Fisheries, against young anglers from all over the North West. A strong field of 42 anglers turned up on the day from well-established teams including Warrington Anglers, Winsford & District Anglers, Penketh & Old Hall AS and Matrix Tameside.

The match, held on the Meridian Canal, a venue previously known for its big weights of carp and barbel, was to be used as a practice for upcoming team events - where all the Club’s anglers would have to stick to a plan. Today’s tactics were to target the more reliable silver fish, rather than the elusive big carp that are not resident in every peg.

Little and often feeding of a light ground bait, laced with softened 2mm pellets, with 4mm expander pellets and red maggots on the hook, fished down the track was the proposed technique.

All of the lads fished brilliantly and as the match progressed it became apparent that the team plan was right as only a few carp were showing and only ounces separated pegs.

DNMACs top placed angler was Declan Butler, with 4th, backed up by a number of our juniors in the top 10. DNMAC finished with six anglers in the top 16 which really does demonstrates the abilities and strength of fishing together as a team.

All of the lads fished exceptionally well but our angler of the day was Zac Chatterton. Zac really stuck to his guns, fished to the plan and ended up with 6th overall with a mixed bag comprising of small f1s, skimmers, roach and rudd.

Top result guys, Trent and Mersey canal next.

Carp Death Rigs

Weed cutting took place yesterday on Disley Dam and, as the boat had been used, it was decided to take some time removing the rigs that have been decorating the water side trees and bushes.

From the 5 rigs removed 2 rigs (40% of those found) require mentioning.

Rig 1.

Rig 1 had a barbed hook, which is against curent club rules, and a lead/feeder that was jammed onto the safety clip so tightly that with it could never have been pulled off. A carp stuck in weed or snapping the main-line would be unable to eject the barbed hook and would be tethered to the lead indefinitely.

Rig 2.

Rig 2 actually takes some believing. The bolt rig is created using several sea fishing parts including numerous strong swivels and clips. There is no safety clip and no way of releasing the lead should the knot/mainline fail. BUT it gets worse - the hook itself is a very large sized salmon worming hook not only barbed but with barbs on the shank. Any carp caught on this hook will be irreparably damaged. A carp stuck in weed or snapping this line would be unable to eject the barbed hook and would be tethered to the lead indefinitely.

There was also a surface controller float found in a tree. Floating baits are currently banned on Disley Dam.
As a result of finding these rigs club bailiffs may ask you to reel in and check you end tackle, please comply with their wishes, they are only trying to protect the fish and the environment you are fishing in.

The rules for fishing DNMAC are clearly written in the club book. Anyone found breaking the club rules will face disciplinary procedures.
As a club DNMAC is spending a considerable amount of time and effort educating juniors in safe and productive fishing techniques, however, advice and assistance is available to all our club members. Ask a bailiff, ask at a club meeting, ask on the web forum or ask at one of the local tackle shops for help.

The following video is one of many on the internet that demonstrate safety rig clips.

Fishermen are being warned by the Angling Trust to avoid the website www.rodlicence.net The site charges an unnecessary administration fee for supplying fishers with a rod licence, this can be anything up to an extra £20 on top of your license fee. Licences are available without an administration fee from the Environment Agency and Post Office.
