Watford Lodge 26th October match results

With Autumn arriving on the back of hurricane Gonazalo weather conditions have drastically changed with a subsequent effect on the local fishing. Clear water and leaves everywhere dictated changes to the usual tactics and Ben Fowler was the first angler to benefit.

Targeting small silvers with punch bread, Ben caught 5lb 2oz of roach and a solitary chub to claim his first DNMAC win. Well done Ben keep it up!

DNMAC 2014 Fur 'n' Feather

This year’s annual Disley and New Mills AC Fur and Feather was held at the impressive Birch House Fisheries just outside of Ashbourne on Horseshoe lake, which is very popular with its large stocking density of primarily small carp and silver fish.
As with last year the weather was shocking, but, the match was still a sell out with 32 brave anglers all with the anticipation of a good days sport and the banter that goes hand in hand with club match fishing.
This was a match of two halves, for some fishing was frantic right from the start but then faded off as the match progressed, for others it was very slow early on but the fish eventually showed to those who waited.

Chris Simpson was one of these anglers who struggled at the start, with a bite less first hour, but finished strong with good quality fish on meat and caster fished at 6 meters and then some bonus large carp down the edge on dead maggot claiming victory with over 45lb of fish.
1st Chris Simpson 45lb 12oz
2nd Paul Greenlees 34lb
3rd Paul Bacon 31lb
Section Wins
Andy Bailey 20lb 9oz
Steve Rowe 30lb 12oz
Mick Berry 10lb 12oz
Keith Riley 30lb 7oz
James Maynard 20lb 4oz
After the match there was a warming bowl of chilli to accompany the presentations.

Thanks again to Simpsons Tackle for sponsorship the event and ensuring that everybody came away with a prize.
Next year’s match is booked for Saturday 10th October at border fisheries near Crewe a cracking venue with a brilliant cafĂ©, booking is essential.
Thanks again for all who helped on the day and see you next year.

Disley Dam 28th September match results‏

Following the spring stocking on the dam earlier this year the summer's sport has been fantastic with pleasure anglers catching plenty of fish. The small carp we recently introduced, have really piled on weight and have also stirred the older resident fish into heavy feeding. Perch have been coming out by the dozen and the large bream have been showing in numbers.

With all the above in mind there was high expectations for this match but, frustratingly, it just didn't happen. Fish could be seen all over the lake but sport was exceptional hard.

The winner on the day was Matt Robinson with a single fish weighting 8lb caught on the method feeder from peg 16 on the train bank.

1st Matt Robinson 8lb
2nd Darren Blaydon 6lb

Makes you wonder if fish know when it's a Sunday???

Strines update

Dovecoates Lodge is looking good, with lilly pads breaking the surface from the man-made tyre planters. The lodge will soon be ready for stocking and already seems to have a healthy amount of aquatic insects and invertebrates.

The backlodge is also fishing well with plenty of small roach and perch coming out to worm and maggot, with the odd bin lid to pellet.

Pictured Chris Simpson and Matt Robinson with a few of the better bream.

River Etherow Update

This Wednesday saw the completion of our latest addition to the club portfolio a 25+ peg stretch of the River Etherow.

A lot of work was completed on this new stretch by the 12 members who attended the latest work party. The car park is now capable of holding around 8 cars and a further 3 spaces have been made down the track behind the weir. Around 10 swims have also been opened up with easy access to some of these swims.

Brilliant work, thanks again to all who turned up.

Rules for this section are on the club notice board in the car park and we are asking all members to check on everyone’s membership status who they see fishing the river.

Feedback on this section is important as we need to get a clear understanding of what this stretch holds, how often it is fished and how it fishes.

As mentioned earlier the river is only available to working party stamp holders (or those who are exempt) until terms are fully agreed and published in next year’s club book.

The full address for the section is
River Etherow
B6104 Compstall Road

Map and rules are available in the web forum.

River Etherow - New water

Disley & New Mills have acquired a stretch of the River Etherow.
The details to fish the river will be available in the Club Book from January but until then the water is available under the following rules.
  • Fishing is from the right hand bank only. (When looking in a downstream direction)
  • Directions to the river are available on the forum or by asking at Simpsons Tackle Whaley Bridge (check that Chris, the Club Secretary, is in before visiting!) or by speaking to one of the Committee Members at one of the Club Meetings.
  • Fishing is only available for 2014 for those with a valid work party pass or those who are exempt.
  • No Junior Members unless fishing the same peg as an Adult Member or Non Fishing Member.
  • Night fishing is available with a night syndicate stamp, we would advise not to fish alone at night on the river. Two rods maximum
  • At the moment this is a coarse only fishery, although the river holds numbers of trout and grayling until further notice there is no fly fishing or wading allowed on this stretch.
  • Unlike the Goyt and Sett legering is allowed, but no fixed leads.
  • Anyone fishing for barbel must have an adequate landing net and an unhooking mat.
  • No keepnets are allowed.
  • As with all our waters barbless hooks only.
  • The banks can be steep please take care.
The water contains trout, grayling, chub and barbel plus possibly other coarse fish – let us know what you catch!

Watford Lodge 26/06/14

With near perfect conditions the Lodge fished well with most anglers catching mixed nets. The bream though continued to frustrate cruising around but refusing to feed but the crucians and tench were on the bottom, feeding well on smaller baits like maggots and worms. Pete Lally made it 2 on the trot drawing the same peg as his previous week’s victory, peg 1. Pete fished worm up against the floating islands to catch quality roach, perch, tench and crucians.
1st Pete Lally 10lb 7oz
2nd Steve Rowe 5lb 1oz
3rd Ben fowler 4lb 13oz
The next match on Birch Vale has been cancelled due to lack of interest. The next match on Watford Lodge is on Thursday 10th July.

New Mills Marina June 12th

With baking hot weather masses of people trudging up and down the tow path and zero movement on the canal this week’s evening match was going to be hard!!

The match started ok but quickly slowed up with most struggling though the middle of the match until the fishing picked up again towards the end of the session.

Tony Horton won with a nice net consisting of two good skimmers and smaller roach all caught on squat over dark groundbait.

1st Tony Horton 5lb 12oz
2nd Chris Simpson 2lb 8oz
3rd Darren Blaydon 2lb 1oz

The golden peg rolled over again and is building up nicely!

Watford Lodge 5th June Results

Fishing was hard for most but know nobody told Graham Howe who made it two on the bounce using similar tactics to last weeks win: long pole & pellet.

Luckily for the rest he didn't draw the golden peg so the pot rolls on and continues to build.

1st Graham Howe 11lb 8oz
2nd Steve Rowe 2lb 14oz
3rd Darren Blaydon 2lb 4oz

Next week the match is on the canal at New Mills Marina to book on please ring Chris 01663 734220

Watford Lodge Lilies

After gathering the large number of lilies the previous week and the subsequent planting at Strines, Disley and Bowden there was enough left to try introducing plants at Watford Lodge.
Because most of the shallower areas of Watford comprise of stone bedding, hessian sacks were filled with a mix of clay, soil and compost to try and give the plants every chance of establishing themselves. In the past growing plants at Watford has never been easy so fingers crossed we will see some positive results.

Sixteen sacks were planted and distributed with the majority of these located on the road side.

Strines update

After, reducing the water, water lilies have now all been planted into the central tyre columns at Dovecotes and the water allowed to fill to normal levels on the 2nd June. There will be plenty of  spots which are sure to be great areas to target, hopefully you would of noted these when the levels were down!
The bloodworm life is also very impressive considering how long the pond was drained for.

29th May Watford Lodge - results‏

A cooler spell in the weather saw weights rise as the smaller Tench and Crucians went off the feed and the lakes resident larger bream came into play.
Graham Howe won on the evening with a superb weight of Bream caught from the middle of the dam wall fishing long pole and pellet.
1st Graham Howe 13lb 10oz
2nd Darren Blaydon 9lb 8oz
3rd Ben Fowler 3lb 14oz
The golden peg rolled on.......

Lillies for Strines, Bowden & Disley Dam!

A small band of DNMAC volunteers gave up a day’s fishing to retrieve a quantity of lilies to be replanted at Strines, Bowden and Disley Dam.

These plants will hopefully add fishing features, protection for fish from avian predators and add a bit of colour to your fishing surroundings!

Has anyone found a pair of Steve Neville remote alarms on Disley Dam. They would have been in the peg beside the Island at the shallow side and were in Steve Neville soft covers.

Please contact anyone in the committee, pefrerably Chris Simpson, to get these back to the owner.

Match Results

Thursday 8th May Peak Forest Canal, Furness Vale Marina
On a very wet and windy evening the weather felt more autumnal than late spring but a fair number of dedicated matchmen turned out for the match.

Mat Robinson draw the Golden Peg but again it rolled over as he struggled to find any of the canals larger perch on his chopped worm tactics. Instead the winner on the day was Darren Blaydon, who fished bread punch, to catch two nice skimmers and small roach.

1st Darren Blaydon 3lb 2oz
2nd Steve Rowe 1lb 12oz
Tuesday 13th May Watford Lodge
The weather for this match was a vast improvement on the previous weeks canal fixture and for some the fishing was as well! Chris Simpson had the Golden Peg on a good draw and luckily made the most of it fishing off peg 1.

Fishing worm over loose groundbait he caught a nice bag made up of mainly small tench at 6 meters and took the honours to net £80.
1st Chris Simpson 8lb 4oz
2nd Graham Howe 4lb 5oz

Work Party Updates

Plenty of work party activities have taken place these last few weeks. Water has now been diverted back into Dovecotes Lodge, water quality improvements are taking place on multiple venues, Martin’s team continue to perform minor miracles improving pegs at Linnets and John managed a group of workers to install a gate and 200 meters of fence at Disley. Thanks to everyone that has helped this year on all the work parties. Some of the work has been very labour intensive especially the Linnets and Disley fence work but there is a job for everyone but contacting a co-ordinator before the work party does help us organise duties in advance.
